Why Apple Is Paying Google One Billion Dollars a Year to Fix Siri


For over a decade, Siri has been one of the most recognised yet most criticised products in the technology industry. Introduced in 2011 as a revolutionary voice assistant capable of understanding natural language and acting on it intelligently, Siri quickly became a punchline. Updates came slowly, reliability remained inconsistent, and as competitors including Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and more recently ChatGPT demonstrated what genuinely intelligent voice and text assistants could do, Apple's flagship assistant fell further behind. Now, in 2026, Apple is attempting to change all of that with the most ambitious Siri overhaul in the product's history. And to do it, the company is reportedly paying its oldest rival in the AI space approximately one billion dollars a year.

Apple has confirmed that a completely reimagined version of Siri is targeted for launch in March 2026, tied to the iOS 26.4 update. CEO Tim Cook addressed the project directly during a recent earnings call, telling investors the company is making good progress on a more personalised Siri and expects to release it in the coming year. The delay from the original 2025 target was driven by Apple's internal testing process, which identified quality and consistency issues significant enough that the company decided to extend the timeline rather than ship a product that did not meet its standards. That decision, while frustrating for users who have been waiting years for a meaningful Siri upgrade, may ultimately prove to be the right one.

The most striking element of this overhaul is not the features themselves, but how Apple is building them. Rather than developing a proprietary large language model to compete directly with OpenAI's GPT family or Google's Gemini series, Apple has chosen a partnership strategy. The company is reportedly licensing Google's Gemini AI model, specifically the 1.2 trillion parameter version, to power a significant portion of Siri's new intelligence capabilities. The financial commitment behind this deal is substantial. Reports indicate Apple is investing approximately one billion dollars annually for access to this technology. That figure reflects how seriously Apple is taking this effort, and how far behind the company recognises it has fallen in the AI model arms race.

The choice to use Google's Gemini is pragmatic and data-driven. Google's Gemini 3 Pro has demonstrated measurable advantages over competing models in areas including coding, mathematical reasoning, and creative writing tasks. Notably, it has scored nearly double OpenAI's GPT-5 Pro on key reasoning benchmarks, a margin that would be difficult for Apple to close if it attempted to build a comparable model entirely in-house in the same timeframe. By licensing Gemini rather than competing with it, Apple is freeing its engineering resources to focus on what the company does exceptionally well, which is deep integration across a tightly controlled hardware and software ecosystem. The AI model becomes infrastructure. The experience built on top of it becomes the product.

Privacy has always been a central pillar of Apple's brand, and the Gemini integration does not change that. Apple's implementation will run on its Private Cloud Compute servers, a proprietary system designed to process AI queries without exposing user data to third parties. This means that even though the underlying model belongs to Google, the data pathway remains within Apple's infrastructure. It is a technically complex arrangement, but one that allows Apple to make credible privacy claims while still benefiting from external AI capabilities that it does not currently have the ability to match on its own.

So what will the new Siri actually be able to do? The answer represents a meaningful departure from what users have come to expect. One of the most anticipated features is what Apple calls on-screen awareness. This capability allows Siri to understand what the user is currently looking at on their device and take contextually relevant actions based on that content. If you are reading an email about an upcoming trip, Siri will be able to identify that context and respond to questions about the trip without requiring you to explain it. If you are viewing a recipe, Siri can interact with the content of that page directly. This is the kind of seamless, ambient intelligence that Apple promised years ago but never delivered.

Cross-application integration represents another major leap. The new Siri will be able to pull structured data from across the Apple app ecosystem, including Mail, Messages, Calendar, and Notes, to generate composite responses that current voice assistants cannot match. Apple has demonstrated scenarios where a user asks Siri to find a book recommendation that their mother sent in a message. Rather than simply searching the internet, the new Siri hunts through the user's device data, identifies the relevant contact, locates the message, and surfaces the recommendation. This kind of personal context awareness, combined with memory of past interactions, moves Siri closer to the vision of a genuine personal assistant rather than a voice-activated search engine.

Apple is also introducing what it calls World Knowledge Answers, a system that integrates web search capabilities directly into Siri responses. Rather than redirecting users to a browser, the new Siri will generate comprehensive answers that incorporate text, photographs, video, and local points of interest into a single unified response. A query about a restaurant, for example, would return not just the address and phone number, but photos, review summaries, and directions, all presented without requiring the user to leave the conversation. This positions Siri to compete more directly with the conversational search capabilities that ChatGPT and Google's AI features have been offering for the past two years.

It is worth noting that many of these features are not entirely new in concept. Apple announced on-screen awareness and deep cross-app integration capabilities at WWDC 2024, and they were expected to ship in iOS 18. They never did. The technical challenges involved in making these features work reliably across hundreds of millions of devices, with varying hardware configurations and usage patterns, proved more significant than anticipated. The partnership with Google is partly what has allowed Apple to revisit these capabilities with a stronger AI backbone that can handle the complexity involved.

The broader iOS strategy supports this AI push in a deliberate way. iOS 27, according to reports, is expected to focus heavily on stability, bug fixes, and performance improvements rather than new feature launches. This mirrors Apple's legendary Snow Leopard release for macOS in 2009, which was positioned as a refinement release rather than a feature release, and which created the stable foundation that subsequent years of innovation were built upon. If iOS 27 follows this pattern, it will provide the rock-solid infrastructure that Siri's sophisticated new capabilities need to operate reliably at scale.

The competitive context for this launch could not be more urgent. ChatGPT's voice features have set a new standard for what users expect from an AI assistant. Google's own assistant has been substantially upgraded with Gemini capabilities. Samsung has integrated Galaxy AI deeply into its Android devices. Microsoft has Copilot embedded throughout Windows and Office. Apple, the company that arguably invented the modern voice assistant category in 2011, is now playing catch-up across the board. The March 2026 timeline is not just a product milestone. It is, as industry observers have noted, close to the absolute limit of how long Apple can afford to wait before the gap between Siri and its competitors becomes a meaningful factor in consumer purchasing decisions.

The financial backing for this effort is not in question. Apple reported record quarterly revenue of 102.5 billion dollars, giving it the resources to sustain a billion-dollar annual investment in external AI infrastructure without material impact on its overall financial position. The question is not whether Apple can afford to do this. The question is whether the combination of Google's AI model and Apple's ecosystem integration expertise will produce something that users experience as genuinely better, and whether it will arrive in time to matter.

Apple will provide developers and the public with a full preview of the new Siri at WWDC in June 2026. The March launch of iOS 26.4 is also expected to coincide with new smart home hardware, including a second-generation HomePod Mini and an updated Apple TV, creating an ecosystem-wide moment that puts the reimagined Siri at the centre of Apple's product story for the year. Whether this is the moment Siri finally fulfils its original promise, or another chapter in a long history of delayed ambitions, will depend on execution. Apple has the model, the hardware, the money, and the motivation. What comes next will determine whether the wait was worth it.
